Azelaic acid esters form an integral component of renewable and degradable plastics and are derived from replenishable oleochemicals. Azelaic acid is used to manufacture PVC plasticizers from a plant source and not a fossil fuel. In recent times, Azelaic acid is also used in synthetic lubricants and corrosion inhibitors. It is specifically used as a thickening agent in lithium complex greases. Azelaic acid is of commercial interest as a synthetic lubricant base stock; to manufacture high-performance copolyesters for use in industrial adhesives (more particularly laminating adhesives for food and pharmaceutical packaging), films and fibers, and polymeric plasticizers.
