People stuck at home for months can create a devastating effect on their minds. Especially for those who are used to stepping out of their house every day for their work. The enforcement of worldwide lockdown and social distancing norms to mitigate the spread of coronavirus quarantined everyone in the house. Though people are connected through their smartphones, it is still difficult to adjust to the new norms and retain sanity.
While everyone is struggling indoors, the evident spike in internet usage was observed and several internet providers strived to deliver flawless networks to their consumers. Likewise, the traffic in the online gaming industry marked an all-time high in the initial weeks of lockdown. Sports lovers resorted to the online gaming facilities as several sports events like football and cricket tournaments got canceled. The online gaming services offer both entertainment and a feasible platform to connect with friends to engage in many multiplayer games available on the internet.
The gaming companies are also adapting to the sudden surge in demand for their services. They implemented many tactics and ensured the gamers to offer better and faster facilities to improve their gaming experience. A popular game like Pokémon Go which garnered lot of rage in 2016 encouraged players to stay indoors. The gaming company, Niantic ensured the players introduce new features that are safe for the players and do not promote stepping out during the pandemic. Rockstar Games, the founder of Red Dead Redemption also promised uninterrupted operations. Christian McCrea from RMIT University of Australia highlighted the possibility of a major transformation in gaming habits as the children and the many office-goer gamers are stranded at home for the lockdown.
However, it is of great concern to determine the effects of excessive gaming on the minds of the players. In 2018, the World Health Organization declared gaming addiction as an illness, and China vehemently supported this view, which led to an urgent campaign against the online gaming industry over the concern for the country’s youth. Nevertheless, the global market of online gaming services eventually intensified in consumer trafficking as the pandemic prevailed. This showed the success of this industry in surviving the worldwide financial turbulence and creating a sustainable work culture.
