The current method of providing drugs to a patient is not highly efficient. This is because once they are injected or swallowed, they depend upon the movement of the body fluids to find their way around the body. Thus, some types of diseases cannot be treated effectively through this approach. For instance, glioblastoma (an aggressive form of brain tumor) is extremely difficult to treat and is responsible for killing thousands of people every year. However, the disease produces finger-like projections inside a patient’s brain tissue causing damage to the blood vessels surrounding them. The progress of the disease in this way makes it hard for drugs to reach the tumor site.
To overcome this challenge, researchers have now developed tiny nano-sized robots and vehicles that would have the ability to navigate within the blood vessels to reach the disease site. This is a huge advancement for Nano Robotics Market as this innovation would make use of nanorobots to deliver drugs to the tumor that were rather hard to treat before this.
Nanoparticles are known to be ten times smaller than RBCs (Red Blood Cells), and if passive particles are used, there is no available method to control them. To overcome this challenge, researchers used ultrasound to manipulate nanodevices carrying cancer-killing drugs. Typically, ultrasound technology is used by medical personnel for imaging because the high-frequency sound waves bounce off different body parts, which is then used to create an image.
Although there are several forms of technique applicable that could help guide drug-carrying nano vehicles such as magnetic fields or light chemicals. However, ultrasound is the most advantageous for numerous reasons. The technique can easily penetrate deep parts of the body and is still proven to be quite safe for humans. For instance, it is routinely used for detecting fetal heartbeats in pregnant women. Further, it is relatively inexpensive and can be found in most hospitals and clinics. Thus, the use of ultrasounds will help to achieve precision, and wherein drugs could be delivered to specific locations in the body, helping tackle common but deadly diseases. Even though the novel technology would do wonders for medical science, there are still trials that need to be taken further before it is used on people in reality. Still, the researchers are optimistic that the innovation would be effective in targeting diseases and will be brought into the field for use in near future.
